Snake Gaiters

Snake gaiters are inexpensive
The most popular forms of snake protective clothing are Snake Gaiters. Snake gaiters are simply leg gaiters that offer a puncture proof barrier and extend to just below the knee. The definition of "gaiters" is: A heavy cloth or leather covering for the leg extending from the instep to the ankle or knee. So snake gaiters are basically just that, but made to where snakes are unable to puncture the material.

There are several reasons why Snake Gaiters are the most popular item of snake protective clothing sold around the world.
  1. Inexpensive. You are only buying a little bit of specialized fabric with a slight amount of manufacturing such as sewing and such. A good pair of snake gaiters will cost between $50 - $100, not much more than gaiters which are not snake proof.
  2. Effective: Snake gaiters do a great job of protecting the area of the body that is most sucseptible to snake bites: the lower leg.
  3. Comfort: high quality snake gaiters are made to be light and are therefor quite comfortable.  They are the best bet when the temperatures heat up.
  4. Compact: Snake gaiters do not take up a lot of space so there is no reason to leave them behind.  Infact, the best brand (Snake Armor TurtleSkin Snake Gaiters) is made out of extremely lightweight, puncture proof fabric that can be stuffed into a very tight space.  Check them out at the link at the end of this article.
TurtleSkin Snake Gaiters: The best on the Market
Snake Gaiters have traditionally been constructed of hard plastics such as PVC.  These were not comfortable and spent more time in the truck than on people's legs.  Since then, innovation has led snake gaiters to new heights and now there are several brands that are almost unnoticeable as long as it does not get too hot.

Several of the less expensive brands of snake gaiters use a PVC coating, but the main part of the gaiter is typically Cordura or some type of tight weave Denier.  Being predominately fabric allows snake gaiters to be flexible.  The best brand, TurtleSkin, is extremely flexible, along the same lines as a high dollar rain jacket.

This is just a ruff overview of what Snake Proof Gaiters are and how they can benefit you in the field.

Snake Gaiters are nice in the fact that they are quite unnoticeable as long as it is not to hot.

  1. Agreed that the best brand of snake gaiters on the market today is TurtleSkin. All the attributes of expensive brands (snakeproof, windproof, waterproof, etc.) but is as flexible and comfortable as a less expensive brand. Since they can handle almost any terrain, it's good to pick up a pair from http://GoldRushTradingPost.com as they offer a free nylon storage bag for each pair of Turtleskin snake gaiters bought - very handy to be able to pop them in the bag so you can stay clean til you get home.
